Sunset at Hinchinbrook Channel |
|
Monday/Tuesday Aug 27/28 Started early sailing North. Nice weather, but a little slow at times with light winds. Reached Lucinda Tuesday afternoon. A little trouble getting into Lucinda had to anchor and wait for tide to rise before we could make it. Anchored in Hinchinbrook Channel, a lovely place.
Wednesday Aug 29 Bradley and I wanted to tour the Victoria Mills sugar plant in Ingham, about 20 miles from Lucinda. We went into Lucinda by Dinghy and immediately caught a ride, then another one right into Ingham. We arrived in time for an early lunch and a brief tour of the shops. Then started towards the sugar mill for the 1:30pm tour. Decided to short-cut by following the railroad tracks. It worked out OK, but at 1:15pm we still had a good ways to go, so were able to catch another ride and make it on time. The tour was great the mill processes the cane all the way through to raw sugar. Then its sent to a refinery for any further processing.
We were done by just a little past 2:00pm and started down the road towards Lucinda awaiting our next ride. But it turned out to be the most deserted road in all Australia only six cars came past in an hour an a half and none of them stopped! Finally, after two hours of walking, a women finally stopped and took us all the way into Lucinda. Thank goodness for her!
Stopped by a seafood shop and bought all kinds of stuff prawns, mussels, scallops, barrumundi. Little did I know it was for my surprise anniversary dinner boiulabaise, which Ron prepared for us. All in all, a great day. Anchored for the night a little further up the Hinchinbrook channel.
Thursday Aug 30 Set off to sail north again. The wind was not cooperative. Light and blowing from the North. We stopped for the night at Kent Island.
Friday Aug 31 Weather again not cooperative. Light winds from the North. Only thing to do is to head straight for Cairns. Were hoping to get in another snorkeling stop, but its not to be. Arrived at the Yorkey Knob Marina just north of Cairns around 4:00pm. The boat will stay at this marina for the next month. Had time for a nice run around the local golf course before dinner. Met a couple staying here that has a cute dog a border collie/blue heeler mix. Reminds us of our Jordan.
Saturday Sept 1 Spent most of the day working on the boat. Lots to do wash down the whole exterior, soak lines in fresh water, chamois all the stainless steel, etc, etc. Got in a nice bike ride in the afternoon. Invited our friends with the dog over for drinks.
Sunday Sept 2 I did a nice long run in the morning while it was still cool. It is really tropical here very hot despite being the middle of winter. Rest of the day spent working on boat, relaxing, and doing laundry in preparation for leaving this afternoon- DARN! |
