Suva to Nadi
9/20 – Anchor up and off towards Nadi. No wind, plenty of rain. Motored all day. Stopped after 50 miles at Fijiian Resort, the largest resort in Fiji. More books read in last few days – First You Have to Row a Little Boat, a book about sailing as a metaphor for life from Roger & Jeannette Philips, Executive Sanction, a dumb CIA novel, and The Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw, the woman swordfish boat captain – excellent. Anchored in a beautiful little cove near the resort
9/21 – Bradley and I up early and off for a run at 6:30. The resort is huge – on an island with nice beaches, golf course, two pools, and lots of shops. Saw several boys riding horses on the beach and in the surf bareback. Ran up b-I-g hill and along horse trails for a nice view. Cooled off with a quick dip in the pool. Lots of people at resort “reef walking” Reef is exposed for a long way out from shore. Lots of kids at resort too. Only one other boat – Azure Te, a 43-foot Ron Holland design. Owners are from San Francisco, on their way to NZ. They plan to stay there for a year or so and probably buy a car. We departed about 10:00am for the next leg to Musket Cove – about 30 miles. Still no wind.
Reached Musket Cove by mid-afternoon. Trick entrance – lots of reefs. Slow going. Lots of boats anchored here. Beautiful place.. Saw Charlatan, a 130’ boat. Will knows the crew. The boat charters for $45K a week. Savannah was another similar sized boat. Ron Holland’s personal boat Opus was there too but Will and Eddie weren;t very impressed with it. Bradley and I went for a nice swim. Water was quite shallow – you can almost walk from one island to another. Some good coral and fish and good swimming practice for me. Went ashore for dinner – a barbecue at the beach bar. Talked to crew of Charlatan and some of the other boats.
9/22 – Went for a walk on the island. Nice resort with good facilities for yachties. Has a small airstrip with regular flights from Nadi. Walked along beach, up airstrip, and up a hill for a fantastic view. Breakfast at resort restaurant then back to the boat to pack (yuc).Time for a quick snorkel before leaving. Five minutes by dinghy to plenty of great reefs. We could have stayed for hours but it was time to move on to Nadi so we can all catch our flights home. About two hours to Vuda Point Marina. We shared a taxi to town with a lady from South Africa. Went to Lakota – Sugar City – where they grow lots of sugar cane. It’s predominantly Indian and a much different atmospheres than Suva. More pushy, hard sell negotiating. Bought a nice kava bowl at the market plus other odds and ends. Lots of shops but not a lot of variety.
After a shower at the Marina and a goodbye drink with Will and Kristen it was off to the airport and home to Mocha! |
